Celebrate Youth Day by thinking about all the ways that you can make your greatness blossom.
Youth Day is a public holiday celebrated on the 16th of June each year in South Africa.
On Youth Day we commemorate the protest known as the Soweto Uprising of 1976. We remember the brave young people who came together to protest against the unfair way that they were being taught during Apartheid, and the role that the youth played in ending Apartheid and bringing about positive change in our country.
"Sometimes it falls upon a generation to be great.
You can be that generation. Let your greatness blossom."
- Nelson Mandela
On Youth Day we also think about the fact that young people are important, that we should listen to their ideas and opinions, and that they have the potential to be great.
Nelson Mandela reminded us that all young people can show greatness. Greatness can be shown in many ways. This year, we are reflecting on the ways that you can show your greatness through love, determination and kindness.
We encourage our friends to have conversations at home about how young people can show kindness in their neighbourhoods, show determination at school, and show love towards their family.
You can download the activity sheet below to help you have those conversations.
Let your greatness blossom!
